SI 75 years anniversary, the relevance of the Frankfurt Declaration
Seventy-five years ago, following World War II, on July 3, 1951, in Frankfurt, Germany, tracing its roots in the 19th century workers’ movement, the Socialist International was founded as the global federation of socialist and social democratic parties. The Congress was chaired by Morgan Philips, General Secretary of the British Labour Party. The 30 political parties that participated in the meeting adopted the historical Frankfurt Declaration, a historic document outlining the core principles of modern democratic socialism. The Socialist International since 1951 increased substantially its members from all continents, adapted its organizational structure and activities to the requirements of the 21st century and faced successfully many challenges. The Frankfurt Declaration, includes a number of key principles that remain totally relevant today, defining democratic socialism in a very clear way. An anniversary is an opportunity to remember the principles that keep us together and give a meaning to our collective efforts. The Frankfurt Declaration stipulates: In November 2026 the Socialist International will celebrate in Dakar the 50 years of its presence in Africa. The current global landscape gives more reasons to mobilize around the initiative that started in Frankfurt in 1951. Happy anniversary to all the citizens, the parties, the movements, the militants, the leaders that constitute our International.
Les 75 ans de l’Internationale Socialiste : la pertinence de la déclaration de Francfort
Il y a soixante-quinze ans, à la suite de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le 3 juillet 1951, à Francfort, en Allemagne, s’inscrivant dans l’héritage du mouvement ouvrier du XIXe siècle, l’Internationale Socialiste fut fondée en tant que fédération mondiale des partis socialistes et sociaux-démocrates. Le Congrès fut présidé par Morgan Philips, secrétaire général du Parti travailliste britannique. Les trente partis politiques ayant participé à cette réunion adoptèrent la Déclaration historique de Francfort, un texte fondateur qui énonce les principes essentiels du socialisme démocratique moderne. Depuis 1951, l’Internationale Socialiste a considérablement élargi sa représentation sur tous les continents, adapté sa structure organisationnelle et ses activités aux exigences du XXIe siècle, et relevé avec succès de nombreux défis. La Déclaration de Francfort énonce un ensemble de principes fondamentaux qui demeurent aujourd’hui pleinement d’actualité et définissent avec une grande clarté le socialisme démocratique. Un anniversaire est l’occasion de rappeler les principes qui nous unissent et donnent un sens à notre engagement collectif. La Déclaration de Francfort affirme notamment que : En novembre 2026, l’Internationale Socialiste célébrera à Dakar les cinquante ans de sa présence en Afrique. Le contexte mondial actuel offre plus que jamais des raisons de se mobiliser autour de l’initiative née à Francfort en 1951.
